I am looking forward to the release of this movie. Recently I spent a few days in the company of an exorcist, which was interesting to say the least. Colin O' Donoghue, who plays Michael kovak is from Drogheda, where I live! This is his Feature Film debut, and I wish him well. A few years ago Colin travelled with The Fraternity of St Genesius on our first official pilgrimage to Rome. We were visiting the tomb of St Genesius, in the church of Santa Sasanna. St Genesius is the patron saint of actors.
Inspired by true events, "The Rite" follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of life. The film should be released in Jan 2011.
The film is based on the nonfiction book by Rome-based journalist Matt Baglio, called "The Rite". Baglio was allowed to follow a young American priest during months of training with a senior exorcist at a school affiliated with the Vatican. Over the course of his reporting, Baglio returned to Catholicism. Here is a link to a detailed interview with Baglio.
