| Human Embryos |
The human being must be respected - as a person - from the very first instant of his existence.
The Nobel prize for physiology or medicine for 2010 has been awarded to the British scientist who pioneered in-vitro fertilisation, a procedure that has helped in the conception and birth of 4 million people around the world since the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown in 1978.
The Church teaches that IVF is “morally unacceptable” (Catechism 2377). I state the obvious, but some people are unaware of this teaching. Worldwide, it is estimated that four million people have been born using IVF. But, how many "unwanted" embryos, "spare" embryos have been destroyed? How many "unwanted" embryos are there in freezers throughout the world? I know that most couples who begin IVF do not start off intending to abandon their embryos. Many times they are not aware that "extra" embryos are going to be created. Unfortunately, excess embryos have become standard practice.
Couples are often needlessly sent down the IVF route. If you live in Ireland and you are looking for a morally acceptable alternative to IVF check out NaProTECHNOLOGY (Natural Procreative Technology). It is an integrated and systematic approach to infertility that is suitable for primary care settings. It can be used to help couples with infertility, recurrent miscarriage and other problems. Here is a list of NaPro doctors and Practitioners in Ireland. Wouldn't it be great if their was a NaPro doctor in every Irish town?
