Quotes from an Archbishop

Here are some quotes from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin about the Irish Church. Depressing reading indeed.

"The good-old-days of traditional mid-twentieth century Irish Catholicism may in reality not have so good and healthy after all."

"For many the sacraments are the social events of a civil religion rather than celebrations of the Church."

"Young Irish people are among the most catechised in Europe but apparently among the least evangelized."

"Probably my greatest discouragement as Archbishop of Dublin comes from the failure of interaction between the Church and young people. I visit parishes where I encounter no young people. I enquire what is being done to attract young people to parish life and the answers are vague. "

The two may not be unconnected. The approved religious programmes are a disgrace. No wonder young people know nothing about the faith - they were never taught it properly.

He's right though about Vatican II and the secularisation of Irish society. It is ironic that it was the Vatican that secularised (if indirectly) this country.

Yes the approved religious instruction programmes are a disgrace. I was never taught anything about the faith in school. And my children are being taught even less. There are not too many believing and practicing catholics in our supposedly catholic schools. So many lapsed and unbelieving are in charge of the faith formation of our children.
