One in Four Annual Report 14th Sept 2011

One in Four published it's annual report on September 14th. It received little media attention. I wonder why? Since child protection seems all the rage these days? The full report can be read at http://www.oneinfour.ie/. Below are two excerpts.

"While clerical abuse has been the focus of attention, a wider and more hidden problem is that of sexual abuse within the family. The majority of people attending One in Four have not been abused within the Catholic Church but by a family member or somebody they know in their neighbourhood."

"2010 also saw a steady increase in the number of people seeking support in relation to reporting familial abuse to the GardaĆ and the HSE. The consequences of reporting are far reaching. Clients report social and familial isolation, denial, withdrawal of support, intimidation and threats. Victims fear how the act of reporting and initiating a court case will affect relationships within their family and in the wider community. Some clients have felt their lives would be at risk if they were to make a report."
'Tis shocking to think that such awful things happen in our country, and in our homes.

Prayer for Protection in Our Homes

Visit this house, we beg you, Lord,
and banish from it the deadly power of the evil one.
May your holy angels dwell here to keep us in peace,
and may your blessing be always upon us.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
